NSLD
HISTORY…
The North Suburban Library was created in 1944 when members of the North Suburban Woman’s Club saw an opportunity to start a public library district. The Illinois legislature had recently passed a library district law enabling library districts to be formed. Members of the Woman’s Club saw this as an opportunity to provide families living in local school districts with a public library.
In 1945, voters approved the referendum and the North Suburban Public Library District was established, becoming the first library district in the state of Illinois. In the early years, members of the North Suburban Woman’s Club donated books, furniture, and supplies to help the district. In 2016, the North Suburban Woman’s Club gifted their property to NSLD.
